Task #2: FOR THE ENTREPRENEURS (BUSINESS PEOPLE)

  • Based on what you have learned about trade between the French and First Nations people create a sign for a Trading Post (Store) on St. Croix Island. This sign should list what First Nations items can be traded for which French items and what French items can be traded for which First Nations items. For example 1 beaver pelt could be traded for 2 loaves of bread. It is up to you to decide what the items are worth.
    • To get your thinking started create a list of items the French brought for trade and a list of items the First Nations used for trade.
    • See the example from another explorer’s Trading Post (below) for ideas.
  • Create 5 math problems for the class asking them to decide what they can get for the items you have given them. For example, you can get them to use your Trading Post sign to figure out what French items they can get for 2 beaver pelts or which First Nations items they can get for a piece of silver. Come see me and I will show you an example.
  • Make an answer sheet for your math problems.
